Two main types of permit
An employer-specific work permit is tied to one employer: usually, the Canadian employer must first obtain a positive labour market impact assessment (LMIA), then make you a job offer.
An open work permit lets you work for almost any employer, but it is only available in specific situations.
Francophone Mobility
This stream of the International Mobility Program allows an employer outside Quebec to hire a French-speaking worker without an LMIA. It is an interesting option for Cameroonians who speak French fluently, provided they have a genuine job offer.
Usual documents
- the job offer and, depending on the case, the LMIA or offer of employment number provided by the employer;
- diplomas and proof of experience;
- language test results, if required;
- passport, photos and biometrics;
- a medical exam, depending on the job and the length of stay.
Beware of fake job offers
“Employment contract in Canada” scams are common. A genuine employer does not ask you to pay to get a job or an LMIA, and does not recruit only through WhatsApp. Before paying any money, have the offer checked.
