A visa refusal is disappointing, but rarely a dead end. Most refusals are explained by specific weaknesses in the file, which can be fixed. You still need to understand them before applying again.
Read the refusal letter carefully
For Canada, the IRCC letter states one or more reasons: doubts that you will leave at the end of your stay, financial situation, ties to your home country, purpose of the visit… For the Schengen area, the refusal form also states the reasons. This is your starting point.
The most common reasons
- financial means judged insufficient or poorly documented;
- a large, unexplained deposit in the account just before applying;
- weakly demonstrated ties to Cameroon: job, business, family, property;
- a vague purpose of travel, or one that does not match the length of stay;
- inconsistencies between documents;
- missing or non-compliant travel insurance, for the Schengen area.
Appeal or new application?
For the Schengen area, a refusal can be appealed, within the deadlines and according to the procedure stated on the form. For a Canadian visitor visa, the usual route is to submit a new application that specifically addresses the reasons for the refusal. In any case, resubmitting the same file without changes often leads to the same result.
What to improve
- Finances: statements over several months, regular and documented income, the origin of funds explained.
- Ties: employment and leave certificate, business registration, property titles, family situation.
- The travel plan: a consistent itinerary, bookings, a clear letter of explanation.
- Consistency: the same dates, the same names and the same information in every document.
Never “fix” your documents
After a refusal, it can be tempting to “strengthen” the file with fake documents. It is the worst decision: misrepresentation can lead to a ban, five years for Canada.
